The first 2,000 attendees in New Orleans to register for the 2011 meeting in Hawaii will receive leis, arranged by APA Assembly past-President Jeffrey Akaka, M.D. Dr. Akaka has been working since 1998 to bring the APA meeting to his home state of Hawaii. The association received a special message from Hawaii's U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Akaka, who is Dr. Akaka's uncle. In a letter to the APA Assembly, Sen. Akaka recognized the integral role psychiatrists play in the health care delivery system.
